EDITOR’S NOTE: This column highlights the achievements, talents, and positive experiences of Schenectady High School students, showcasing the vibrant and inspiring side of our community.

From Adversity to Purpose
My name is Elijah Jackson, and I’ve been a student in the Schenectady High school system for the past four years.
I started my freshman year at Schenectady High School, but after a few hectic weeks, I realized I needed a different environment to truly grow. Switching to the high school’s college campus downtown ended up being the best decision for me. It gave me the space, pace, and opportunity to thrive in my own way. Now, I’m proud to be graduating with my associate’s degree in Math Science alongside my high school diploma.

Football has been a major part of my journey. It wasn’t always easy, but it shaped me in ways nothing else could. I had the honor of being the starting varsity quarterback beginning with my Freshman year, and those experiences, every high, low, lesson, and challenge, helped mold me into the person I am today.
From learning how to balance being a student athlete and being an influencer within the community, these opportunities gave me a chance to grow and learn. I have been blessed with the ability to touch other people in different groups to uplift one another. I intend to use my platform for the benefit of others than myself. Now, I’m getting ready to take that next step and play at the collegiate level alongside taking my biology courses to become a veterinarian.
Anyone who knows Schenectady High knows it can be a tough place to navigate. It’s no secret that a lot of kids from Schenectady who play sports such as football or basketball end up at schools like CBA or Niskayuna because their parents want them in a safer and calmer environment.
On the other hand, Schenectady High School can be used as a stepping stone, like I’ve used it. Even though it’s rough, it taught me resilience, leadership, and pride. Everything I’ve been through here is part of my story, and I wouldn’t change it.

For example, last season I unfortunately lost my grandmother, and my starting job as the quarterback within the same week. I hit a low point in my life, and was just getting by with little to no motivation.
With a big year coming up for recruits to come scout me, I didn’t get the jump start I hoped for.
Using the faith and endurance I had left, I persevered through the storm that I had to endure. I took it day by day, while using the resources that were available to me through Schenectady High school.
The season was over, I won my quarterback job back, and put up some numbers on the field. The storm started to clear. I could have just laid down and let life beat me down, but just understanding that everything happens for a reason pushed me. These hardships pushed me and formed me.

Looking back, I’m grateful for every challenge and every opportunity that came my way. Schenectady pushed me, tested me, and forced me to grow up quicker than most. It also showed me what I’m capable of when I stay focused and believe in myself.
As I move forward into college and the next chapter of my life, I’m carrying all of these lessons with me. They’ve shaped not just the athlete I am, but the man I’m becoming.
