News of the Weird
March 15, 2023
In this News of the Weird report, we have cow burps, babies left in the cold, 700 pounds of acorns and necklaces that blink at you.
Burping cows contribute to climate change?
Did you know that cows can burp? I didn’t. Did you know that those burps can hurt the environment?
Cow belches are full of methane. That’s a potent greenhouse gas that traps heat from the sun more than 20 times as efficiently as carbon dioxide. Cows and their multi-chamber stomachs use bacteria to break down plant-based food; that process can release up to 50 liters of methane into the air each day.
With 1.4 billion cows on the planet, the gas emissions add up.
Denmark babies left to nap in freezing weather
Would you put your baby outside to sleep in freezing weather? Parents in Denmark don’t think twice.
In Denmark it’s common to let your baby nap alone outdoors, even in subzero weather. In Denmark, “free-range parenting” is quite common. Free range parenting encourages your kids to function independently and with limited parental supervision.
Babies are also left outside in an attempt to boost their health and immunity, while toddlers are allowed to sleep and play outside in freezing temps. This is heavily criticized by many people who consider it child endangerment as they have the risk of developing hypothermia.
Woodpeckers stuff 700 pounds of acorns in the walls of home
In one California home, they found that a woodpecker had stored acorns in the wall of the home. An exterminator on a routine call found the acorns – 700 pounds worth. “Bird was a bit of a hoarder,” the exterminator said on social media.
Freaky flesh-like accessories
Artist Masataka Shishido’s work scared me when I first saw it. He creates and sells flesh like accessories made out of clay that can blink with the use of a controlled remote. His accessories include dice and pendants that have realistic eyes that blink, and purses in the shape of a mouth that you feed the coins into. Could you imagine these in a Happy Meal?
