Voters okay $300m project to improve schools
May 18, 2023
During school budget balloting Tuesday, voters approved the $300 million capital project by a 79% approval rate. According to the Daily Gazette, superintendent Anibal Soler Jr. stated that he believed it was an opportunity for us to do something bold and to address some things that have been neglected for quite some time.
As the weekly meetings take place the district will finalize their construction plans and any financial issues. Superintendent Soler plans to have construction start at the high school in 2025 – 2030 with a new main office and renovated locker rooms.
Schenectady High School will have $126 million in renovations while $50 million will be split between Central Park Middle School and the Steinmetz Campus, which will be converted to the district’s Freshman Leadership Academy Campus in 2025. Under the district’s plan, one school will house students from multiple other schools as the construction takes place over the following 7 years.
Mr. Soler said before the vote that the capital project, which will receive 98% state funding, will allow the district to seek renovations down the road for district buildings that will not undergo major renovations.
